5 Most Popular Types of Poodles

  • by

When looking to buy a dog of your own, whether it is your first time or you’ve had some experience with this process, you want to know how to do it right. When looking for poodles it is important to know ahead of time what you are looking for in a dog and what you aren’t because different breeds have different attributes. In this article, I will talk about the 5 most popular breeds of poodles and some factors that come into play when purchasing them.

Standard Poodle vs Toy Poodle

The main difference between toy poodles and standard poodles is simply their size. Toy poodles are 10 inches tall and are 4 to 9 pounds on average, while the standard poodle is much larger, with the average ranging from 22 to 27 inches tall and 45 to 70 pounds. Both standard and toy poodles live for the same amount of time, 10 to 18 years. Poodle breeds also run in a variety of different colors from black to red, most colors you would want probably are a part of the Poodle family. A significant reason that people may purchase a poodle, no matter the size, is that they are hypoallergenic.

Goldendoodle

Goldendoodles are a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle and are available in a standard size and miniature. They cost from $1500 to $3500 and come in a variety of colors. These dogs are gentle yet playful and crave being around their human companions. Goldendoodles are perfect for families with small children, first-time pet owners, and even as emotional support animals. However, Goldendoodles are very high-energy and need lots of space and exercise. These dogs also need consistent grooming and without it, there can be skin issues that can develop, and grooming them can be pricey. They are also difficult to train and may have destructive behaviors like nipping or chewing.

Labradoodle

Labradoodles are a mix of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. They cost anywhere from $1500 to $3000 and like every poodle breed, they come in many different colors. These dogs are great family dogs and have big personalities, so they are extremely playful and curious, extremely active, and love people. But, because of their devotion to their families and their protective nature, they can be very aggressive if you try to cross them. They also are great watchdogs, but on the contrary, are terrible guard dogs. They also love the outdoors but don’t necessarily constantly want to be outdoors.

Aussiedoodle

Aussiedoodles are a mix of an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. They cost from $1500 to $3000 and can have very unique color mixes. They are extremely intelligent, very loyal, high prey driven, and love the water. However, they need consistent training and attention to stay the happy, healthy companions that you know and love. They also are very high-energy dogs so low-energy, inactive people probably wouldn’t be the best choice for these dogs.

Bernedoodle

Bernedoodles are a mix of a Bernese Mountain dog and a Poodle. They are the most expensive breed of poodle mixes ranging from $2500 to $4000. They were bred solely for our companionship and enjoy having attention and love. Although Bernese Mountain Dogs are tricolored in their black, tan, and white colors they can have a variety of colors because of the poodles they are bred with. They can have straight or curly hair, although the straighter the hair the more they will shed like a Bernese Mountain Dog. They are very goofy, although because of their poodle blood, they are very intelligent. On the downside, this breed doesn’t like being left alone and can misbehave if they aren’t trained and walked daily or socialized to the outside world.

Maltipoo

Maltipoos are a mix between a Maltese breed and a Poodle. However, this is not a larger dog like the rest, it is a small dog breed, not growing more than 14 inches, and won’t be heavier than 20 pounds. These dogs can be any color but are most commonly white or cream. They cost from $1000 to $3000. They are patient and kind and fit into almost any type of household. However, Maltipoos have more sensitive temperaments, don’t like change, and are prone to barking. They also shed very little so they help in not triggering allergies.
